Canada has an abundance of beautiful camping spots for the outdoor lover to enjoy. If camping is not exactly your cup of tea, there are several ‘wilderness resorts’ that offer the feel of the great outdoors with the comforts of your own home.
Roughing it, or maybe not
If you want to experience everything camping has to offer from filtering your own water to making your own fire-pit to cook on, Algonquin Provincial Park in Ontario is the place to be. However, if you want the comforts of running water and flushable toilets, you can find that here as well.
Algonquin Park is comprised of 7,630 square km of forests, lakes and rivers. Here you may encounter various species of wildlife and see your first shooting star or a glimpse of the northern lights.
Interior camping in Algonquin’s backcountry
When you explore Algonquin, you will experience a vast landscape of maple hills, rocky ridges, thousands of lakes, ponds, streams and spruce bogs. Over 2000 km of canoe routes are available for those who are seeking adventure.
You must book your campsite ahead of time, especially when interior camping in Algonquin. Sites tend to fill up quickly, especially on long weekends during the peak season (July and August).
If you are interested in backpacking trails, Algonquin has more than enough to offer. Choose from the Highland, Eastern Pines or the Western Uplands. Trails range from 6km to 88km in length.
The Parkway Corridor (Highway 60)
For those who are not ready to tackle the park interior, this road-based holiday is for you. You will have all the usual camping activities, but with conveniences such as washrooms and showers. Several of these camping areas even have electricity available should you have an RV or trailer you wish to park.
